Important Safety Information

⚠ Always verify your battery's maximum charge voltage before charging.

⚠ Never exceed the maximum charge voltage specified by the battery manufacturer.

⚠ Never exceed the battery manufacturer's recommended charge current.

⚠ Failure to follow these instructions may result in battery damage, equipment damage, fire, or other unsafe conditions.

Step 1: Connect the Charger to Power

Before connecting a battery:

  1. Plug the charger into a wall outlet or power source.
  2. Allow the charger to power on.

Always connect the charger to the power source before connecting the battery.

Step 2: Set Maximum Charge Voltage

The charger must be configured to the correct target voltage before charging.

Common Battery Voltages

Battery TypeMaximum Charge Voltage
60V Nominal67V
72V Nominal84V
76V Nominal88V
81V Nominal92V

⚠ Do not exceed the maximum charge voltage specified by your battery manufacturer.

Adjusting Charge Voltage

  1. Click the control knob.
  2. The smaller values in the upper-right corner of the display will begin flashing.
  3. Rotate the knob until the voltage value is highlighted.
  4. Click the knob again to select the voltage setting.
  5. Rotate:
    • Clockwise to increase voltage
    • Counterclockwise to decrease voltage
  6. Set the desired maximum charge voltage.
  7. Click the knob again to save the setting.

Step 3: Set Maximum Charge Current

The charger current should be set according to the battery manufacturer's recommendations.

⚠ Exceeding the battery's maximum charge current may damage the battery.

Refer to the battery label or manufacturer documentation to determine the maximum allowable charging current.

Adjusting Charge Current

  1. Click the control knob.
  2. The smaller values in the upper-right corner of the display will begin flashing.
  3. Rotate the knob until the amperage value is highlighted.
  4. Click the knob again to select the amperage setting.
  5. Rotate:
    • Clockwise to increase current
    • Counterclockwise to decrease current
  6. Set the desired maximum charging current.
  7. Click the knob again to save the setting.

Recommended Input Current Limits

110V Operation

Recommended maximum charge current:

15 Amps

220V Operation

Recommended maximum charge current:

25 Amps

⚠ Charging above 15A on a standard 110V circuit is not recommended.

Step 4: Connect the Battery

Once the voltage and current settings have been configured:

  1. Connect the battery to the charger.

Upon connection:

  • The large voltage display will show a voltage value.
  • This value represents the battery's current voltage.

This is a good opportunity to verify the battery's current state of charge.

Step 5: Start Charging

With the battery connected:

  1. Click the control knob.

The charger will begin charging.

Understanding the Display

During charging:

  • The large voltage display shows the battery voltage.
  • The large amperage display shows the current charging amperage.

You may notice that the charging current does not immediately reach the maximum current setting selected in Step 3.

This is normal.

Understanding Charge Tapering

The Lightning Charger uses an intelligent:

CC-CV (Constant Current - Constant Voltage)

charging strategy.

During Early Charging

The charger supplies as much current as possible up to the current limit you selected.

As the Battery Approaches Full Charge

The charger automatically begins reducing charging current.

This process is known as:

Current Tapering

Current tapering helps:

  • Balance battery cells
  • Prevent overcharging
  • Improve battery longevity
  • Ensure safe charging

As the battery approaches the target voltage from Step 2, the displayed charging current will gradually decrease.

This is normal and expected operation.

Step 6: Charging Complete

Charging is complete when:

Battery Voltage

The large voltage display shows the target voltage selected in Step 2.

AND

Charge Current

The large current display shows:

0.0 Amps

At this point:

  • The battery is fully charged.
  • The charger has completed its charging cycle.

Disconnecting the Charger

Once charging is complete:

  1. Disconnect the battery from the charger.
  2. Disconnect the charger from the wall outlet if desired.

Basic Tips!

  1. If you've accidentally entered a settings screen not referred to above, STOP!! Wait 10-15 seconds and the charger should return to the previous screen OR disconnect the charger from the power source and reconnect after 5 seconds to reset the screen
    1. DO NOT modify or adjust any charger settings not mentioned above, failure to do so will void warranty on the product and may cause the charger not to work as designed.
